Arriving at the gallery on Saturday morning, Danni felt terrible. The lack of sleep had made her head buzz, and waves of nausea crept up on her. She would need something more potent than a cappuccino to get her through the day. Gianna herself was late. But Danni felt only relief. It gave her time to be by herself and think about her life and the strange turn of events. Finally, Gianna arrived. She was over an hour late, but then again, she was an artist, and artists had their own rules. They lived life as they pleased, without the restraints of other people. Besides Danni had come to understand that the only rules Gianna followed were her own.
Once they had coffee, Gianna sat Danni down formally and discussed all of Danni's new responsibilities. Thank goodness Gianna had an accountant who handled most of the business's financial side and would now take over the payment of commissions. She upped Danni's commission to 5% and increased her basic salary by 20%. For most of her income, though, Danni would need to rely on sales commissions.
Luckily, Gianna had decided to close the gallery on Sundays and Monday mornings to give her some time off. This would also mean she could exhibit at Bayswater on a Sunday if she wanted to. In addition, Monday afternoons off would allow her at least some more time to paint. For the rest, she'd have to work in the evenings if she was to put together a comprehensive body of work.
Gianna was being very officious. Danni knew she had to be. She was putting a lot of responsibility on Danni's young shoulders and taking a huge chance in relying on her. Danni didn't want to let her down. Gianna believed in justice and admitted that she had sometimes sought revenge, but it was generally on others' behalf. Gianna told her that she always fought for the underdog. She also wasn't one to bear grudges, but Oswald had pushed her too far.
Gianna stood up and rested her hand lightly on Danni's shoulder. "Hey, girl power. We've got this." Then she let one finger trace a line down Danni's back.
"I'm off to shop off a storm and get some new clothes. Hold the fort." With that, Gianna swept out the door and disappeared up the road.
What did that touch mean? Anything? Danni couldn't stop herself from shivering. The slow movement hinted at even greater delights. Was this woman just playing with her? Like a cat with a mouse? Or was there some meaning in the movement of her hand?
How could Gianna even consider Danni a lover? This girl came from a family whose whole idea of art was tasteful, realistic landscapes dotted with white-washed cottages and indications of sheep. They would never understand Gianna's art, let alone approve of it or her lifestyle. Did Gianna want anything more from her than an efficiently run gallery? Danni had so many questions. And Gianna held all the answers.
